It is important to note that anyone with an education degree and licensure is able to be an AD without the following. This authorization is for someone who does not hold a teaching degree and licensure but would like to work as an AD in a school setting.
Requirements - First Issuance
- A baccalaureate degree or higher in athletic administration or related field is required.
- This would include sports psychology, exercise science, etc.
- Currently excludes degrees in communication, business, etc.
- Successful completion of the concussion training approved by the Iowa High School Athletic Association or Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
- Applicants must have attained a minimum age of 21 years.
- Applicants must complete the background check requirements set forth in rule 282—13.1(272).
- Course work from the Leadership Training Institute (LTI) or college semester credit coursework.
- LTC 506 Legal Issues II (Title IX and Sexual Harassment) AND LTC 508 Legal Issues III – (Hazing, Constitutional Law, Disabilities Law, Employment Law & Labor Law) meets Chapter 22 requirements of courses relating to knowledge and understanding of risk management, Title IX, sexual harassment, hazing, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and employment law as they pertain to the role of the activities administrator.
- LTC 501 Guiding Foundations and Philosophies meets Chapter 22 requirements of a course relating to knowledge and understanding of activities administration foundations including philosophy, leadership, professional programs and activities administration principles, strategies and methods.
- LTC 502 Strategies for Organizational Management AND LTC 504 Legal Issues I (Liability for Sports Injuries and Risk Management) meets Chapter 22 requirements of courses relating to knowledge and understanding of the role of the activities director in supporting and developing sports medicine programs, management of athletic player equipment, concussion assessment and proper fitting of athletic protective equipment, and sports field safety.
- LTC 503 Enhancing Organizational Management meets Chapter 22 requirements of a course relating to knowledge and understanding of the role of the techniques and theory of coaching concepts and strategies for interscholastic budget and concepts and strategies for interscholastic fundraising.
- LTC 508 Legal Issues III – (Hazing, Constitutional Law, Disabilities Law, Employment Law & Labor Law) meets Chapter 22 requirements of a course approved by the board, relating to the assessment and evaluation of interscholastic athletic programs and personnel, dealing with challenging personalities, and administration of professional growth programs for interscholastic personnel.

Renewals
2 renewal credits and the mandatory reporter training for child and dependent adult abuse.
OR
Verification of a Master's degree or higher, at least 10 years of PK-12 licensed experience, and the mandatory reporter training for child and dependent adult abuse.
Extension
Yes - if more time is needed to complete renewal requirements.
